I’ve been contemplating your characters and developing a story, and the fun should begin very soon. Though I’m afraid that recent circumstances have made me so busy that I’ll be unable to be your game master. But don’t worry, I’ve been corresponding with Bobbyaka, the controller of fate, and he’s more than happy to fill in for me. Expect a message from him shortly. Be sure to check back frequently or to subscribe to this blog.

Partly as a writing exercise, partly for kicks and giggles, I’m going to be hosting an online role playing game hosted on my blog, based in the medieval world of my novel The Bent Sword. My best ideas for stories have often come from role playing games, so who knows, if your character and story is good, they may end up in future novels. The format will be like this: I write a post establishing the story, then every character may make one comment describing their action. The next day, I update the story. More specific rules will be given in time.

To make the game more interesting, I’m going to send a free copy of The Bent Sword to the winner. The winner is the person who either completes the quest, survives the longest, or the last person who doesn’t drop out from boredom. If you’re interested, comment below with the following information:

Your character’s name

Any distinguishing attributes of your character

Why your character isn’t lame

Editing, editing away, working on our short film “Removed”. It’s going to be quacktastic. I had a good sword fight with my brother Eric. There was a New Film Project meeting tonight with big talk of big investors, big money, big studio, and big films. Big fun. Teresa and I debated the pros and cons of getting our cute little kitty spayed and neutered. Alas, it seems like a necessary evil. Though very sad. I wouldn’t want to be neutered. And neutered cats just aren’t as fun. They lose their ferocity. And what good is a cat if it doesn’t claw and bite you?

At about the same time we got our kittens from the neighbor on our left, the neighbor on the right moved out, and the landlord gave us all of the house’s food storage. Suddenly we had about a year’s supply of food storage, it seems. I think God is looking out for us.

Tonight we went to Chuck E Cheese’s to fulfill Teresa’s burning desire to get out of the house, notwithstanding I was perfectly content to spend my Friday night editing video. I won’t criticize the establishment, as I know how tough business is, though I’ll just say that while the pizza made me sad, the robots made me sadder. But more than anything, I was amazed at how the place brought out the jungle instinct in Ariah. She turned evil. And I mean evil. The instant she entered the place and took in the spectacle of flashing lights, florescent colors, carnivals sounds and clanking tokens, she demanded the liberty to constantly run about like a mad animal. And her appetite was insatiable. It didn’t matter whether or not we’d put a token into her current ride, after a few seconds of it, she was done, eager to move on to the next one with a mad determination. She threw a fit whenever we interfered, and when it was time to go home, she hardly let us hear the end of it until we put her to bed. Teresa and I both agreed that we’d had far more fun at Chuck E Cheese’s before there was an Ariah. Don’t take your kids to Chuck E Cheese’s. Don’t do it.

We woke up this morning to find out that our beloved pet quail had died in its sleep. This was very sad. We believe it was somehow smothered or suffocated beneath its heating pad. This was especially traumatic for Teresa, who’s never had a pet die before. Life truly is very fragile.

Though it’s interesting how fate seems to work, because only hours later, our next-door neighbors announced that they were giving away kittens. On a whim, we took two. It’s as if God, the master storyteller, was saying, “Every setting sun brings a dawn.” It seems especially incredible when considering that the bird and the cats couldn’t have possibly coexisted with us. Maybe the little bird’s time had come. We believe it’s in a better place now.

I did a book signing today at the BYU Bookstore. It seemed slow, but by the end of the night I realized that I’d sold 19 copies. Not too shabby.
